The sixteenth period of American Idol debuted on March 11, 2018, on the ABC TV station. It is the show's first season to air on ABC, following 15 years on Fox. Ryan Seacrest proceeded with his job as the show's host, while Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie joined as judges.

Maddie Poppe from Clarksville, Iowa won the season on May 21, 2018, while her sweetheart Caleb Lee Hutchinson was sprinter up. Poppe was the primary female champ since Candice Glover in season twelve. 

In mid 2017, Variety announced that FremantleMedia was in converses with restore the show for NBC or for its unique system, Fox. A question among Fremantle and Core Media Group wrecked these plans.

On May 16, 2017, Katy Perry was the principal judge to be reported by ABC. On September 24, 2017, Luke Bryan was the second judge to be declared for the restoration season. On September 29, 2017, Lionel Richie was the third and last judge to be reported. 

On February 21, 2018, it was reported that iHeartRadio radio character Bobby Bones would be the tutor for the Top 24 this season.

On April 23, 2018, ABC declared that the April 29, May 6, and May 13 live shows of the season would air over all territory U.S. time zones, a first for American Idol.
